WEE CARE 4 PARENTS, TOO—BRIA WILSON

Meet Bria Wilson and Her Children

Thank you for checking out our first blog highlighting an exceptional parent of children that attends Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare. Our Marketing Team thought long and hard about who should be featured first. It was a unanimous decision to feature Bria Wilson. I’ll tell you why later. But first, let me introduce you to Bria and her children that are enrolled in Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare.

    Bria’s History

Bria Wilson was born in Lansdown, PA, but now lives in Upper Darby. She is a hardworking mother of two that takes an active interest in the lives and well-being of her children. We featured Bria because she and her brother, Bryant Wilson, were attendees at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare when they were children. The daycare was on Marshall Road back in those days. Now that Bria’s grown with children of her own, her children attend Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare in the current location 6800 Market Street, 3rd Floor in Upper Darby.

Why Bria Chose Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids

Although Bria does not have any recollection of attending Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare as a child, one wonders why she sent her children to Darlene’s daycare now when there are so many other options available. I’ll let Bria tell you herself. “It was my mom. I was looking for a daycare for Nylaa when she was three years old. I asked my mother did she know of a good daycare and she suggested I use the same daycare that I attended when I was a kid. She knew that the original location was closed and that the new location is in Upper Darby near me.”

That’s great mother-to-daughter advice. Moms know best! But Bria is grown and could make her own decisions now. So, when asked why she continues to use Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare, she replied, “One of the first things come to mind, I am impressed with the security system in place at the daycare for my children. My children’s safety is important to me. I know just not anyone can come pick up my child. Next, my children love the activities at the center. They always seem to have a good time and they never come home with bad news. They’ve never been hurt or bruised. And you know how truthful kids are. They’ll tell you if something bad has happened to them. The other thing I love about Darlene’s daycare is the communication. I get notifications about their eating and bathroom activities. This is important to me, because one of my children has allergies. I always check my emails whenever I see it is from Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids.”

    Thank You Bria!

We, at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids, would like to express our appreciation for Bria Wilson, her mom, Jacqueline Wilson, as well as Nylaa and Chase. Two generations of loyalty. An outstanding testament to the quality of daycare offered at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids. Bria concludes, “You guys are like family, especially Danita.”

Come and be a part of the “family.” Yes, we care for kids, but we care for our parents, too. Contact us as soon as possible at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids to learn more about the daycare and program options that are available to you.

    MOVIE DAY EVENT

Movie Day Slideshow.MOV from Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids on Vimeo.

Call me sappy, but remember when Little Orphan Annie sang, “Let’s go to the movies. Let’s go see the stars?” (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zctRomXTBLk) Maybe I’m dating myself, but that’s the excitement I felt when I visited the movie theater as a child. If you’re anything like me, do you long for the days when going to the movies was the norm? Can’t you just smell the hot buttered popcorn? The anticipation that bubbled up inside of you as the house lights came down. Those were the days! (Sigh)

banner advertising movie dayThe year 2020 and the coronavirus temporarily put an end to the movie-going experience not only for us, but for the children as well. That’s why we, at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare, brought the movies to the children. They deserve to have fond movie memories, too. On Thursday, March 25, 2021, we held a Movie Day for our preschoolers and school-age children.

    Movie Day

In two separate showings, they watched “Sonic the Hedgehog.”

Of course, what’s watching a movie without popcorn and drinks? That’s why Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids spared no expense to provide each of the attendees with a customized cup with each child’s name on it, Sparkling Cider, and Garrett’s Chicago Mix (whatcha know about that?) popcorn! Mmm Mmm good! Nothing but the best for our children.kids banner garrett's popcorn

    Sonic the Hedgehog

And that’s not all! After the second showing, there was a real-life appearance of Sonic the Hedgehog himself!

    Sonic and Kids

The children went wild with excitement! Thanks to A Dash of Magic Events for letting Sonic come to hang out with our kids.

    Fun Activities

Sonic interacted with the children by playing games such as Simon Says and the limbo. The kids even tested their supersonic speed against Sonic himself in a foot race. I wonder who won?

    Reviews

All had a fun time. But don’t take my word for it. This is what some children stated about the movie day…

“The movie day was good with a lot of fun. I liked it and wish we can do it again!”—Alayah Gray

  • COOKING CLASS—MAKING SWEET UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

    COOKING CLASS—MAKING SWEET UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

Isn’t it amazing how a taste or smell of something can bring pleasant memories flooding back into your mind of better days? That’s called “food nostalgia.” Yes, that’s really a thing and each one of us has it. The taste of certain foods can send you on a one-way trip down memory lane faster than you can say, “More, please!” What memories come to mind when you taste the ooey-gooey sweetness of Rice Krispies Treats?

For me, carefree playing hide-and-seek outside with cousins and other neighborhood kids only to be interrupted by my Grandma “Tee” calling us inside to take a break and partake of a confectionary snack that tickled our childish taste buds. Ah, the good ole days!

Well, at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids, we realize that the events of the past year have brought about challenges for sure, especially for our kids. Yet, we strive to nurture our children despite the crazy world that they are growing up in. That is why we held a Cooking Class on Friday, February 5, 2021, for our Amazing Scholars.

Our talented Chef, Danita Johnson, taught the class step-by-step how to make delectable Rice Krispies Treats.

    Chef Danita Johnson

For the safety of our children, Chef Danita did all this remotely as the children followed instructions while watching iPads.

They could add other ingredients of their choice to their treats to customize it to their taste, style, and even shape.

Each of the Amazing Scholars were outfitted in a customized yellow chef hat, blue apron, and colorful mask for safety. Too cute for words!

The Amazing Scholars not only learned how to make Rice Krispies Treats, they made unforgettable sweet memories that we hope will last a lifetime.

Perhaps whenever they eat Rice Krispies Treats in the future, they will reflect on the fun times they had at Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare instead of focusing on the craziness that is currently surrounding them. Thank you, Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids! We’ll never forget this delicious moment in time.

  • Gift Ideas For Kids

    Gift Ideas For Kids

That time of year for giving gifts is upon us once more. You’ve undoubtedly already seen the “top toys of 2020” list and received several catalogs in the mail from retailers advertising their selection. And, here you are wondering what to get. You want something practical that’s not expensive but will last and something the children in your life will actually enjoy without cluttering their homes with more junk. At Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids, children are our business and we get the inside scoop on what they most enjoy. Tune in today as we share some holiday gift ideas that are sure to please.

    Books

As an early learning center, we are sure you figured books would make the list of great gifts for kids, and you’re right! Books are incredible gifts because they are everything the kids in your life need, and more! Not only do they offer stories and knowledge, and oftentimes, incredible art too, but they bring the reader and the listener closer together. Children can explore far off places with their imaginations or learn how their body works. Learning to read and bonding with those who read to them are the best gifts you can give a person.

    Sport Equipment

Ditch the video games and tablets for something that encourages active play and social skills. Sports equipment helps children get up and get outside, even in colder weather. Whether it’s a scooter or a hockey goal, give the kids in your life a new skill and the confidence to problem solve when they play sports! If the child you are purchasing a gift for already has an interest, support it. If not, offer something new and fun like a pair of rollerblades, a tetherball stand, a jump rope, or a basketball.

    Games or Puzzles

Board games, card games, and puzzles offer children the opportunity to learn through play and include others. Give the gift of family bonding time and challenging their skills with games or puzzles. Select games that are within the ability of the child and puzzles that are slightly above their current skill level to offer a challenge. Choose interactive games that encourage participation and hold the child’s interest while inviting other family members to play. Classic games like Uno or Operation are great for kids of all ages and grow with the child. 3D puzzles offer hours of enjoyment and a tangible keepsake once they are complete.

    Montessori Toys

If you must get a child a toy, get them something that promotes learning and offers a challenge. Rather than a toy that does all the work for them, get them a Montessori toy! What makes a toy a Montessori toy, you ask? These toys are simple, they offer the child the ability to use their imagination and observe. With a lack of flashing lights and sounds, Montessori toys require the child’s participation. Educational toys are great for the child who has everything they need and are available in a variety of skill levels and age groups. Search “Montessori toys” online to find just the right gift.

The children in our lives are great fun to buy gifts for, but before blindly purchasing this year’s top toy, take some time to consider what may benefit them most. Something handmade or practical will be appreciated much longer than the current trending toy. Clothes, craft supplies, and linens are gifts that often go overlooked as well. At Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids, we have a ton of great ideas for gifts for children. As an experienced daycare, we see the things that come and go and the gifts that really make a big difference. • How to Help Youngsters Learn Gratitude

How to Help Youngsters Learn Gratitude

November is the time when most families reflect on all the things they are thankful for—good health, a place to call home, and the loved ones they break bread with. As we age, gratitude becomes easier to understand and appreciate because we better understand what it is to go without, and life has given us enough rain to allow us to marvel at rainbows. For young children, however, gratitude is not always inherent. Are your children thankful for what they do have? Sure, they are! But most children who are well cared for have their needs met by others and have rarely had to go without. It can be difficult for you, as the parent, to ride the line between offering a good life and spoiling. Not to fret, gratitude can be instilled without having to withhold from your child or prematurely expose them to the ugliness of the world. Join us in today’s post as we discuss a few things you can do to help your children learn gratefulness.

    Celebrate Giving to Others

For most parents, when a child ages out of a size of clothing or old toys, it is a time of silent purging. We often collect up the things we no longer need and sell them in a garage sale or online marketplace, throw things away, or donate them to thrift stores without our children ever knowing. Instead of this behind the scenes clearance, next time include your kids and make a big production of it. Announce that “it’s time to clear out old toys we no longer play with and clothes that don’t fit, and we are going to give them to someone else who needs them (or sell them and we can use the money to buy something we do need).” Then, have your kids help you pack up those toys and clothes they no longer need. If they hesitate, remind them that they already have something to replace it. Or say “you know how happy this made you when you were younger? Now that you are older, we can make another little kid just as happy as it used to make you!” Once everything is cleared out, take your kids along with you to the donation center or otherwise. Then, when everything is gone, do something small but special, like get ice cream and reflect about how happy your discarded things will make someone else. Praise them for a job well done. Not only will this help your children appreciate what they have but it will show the importance of doing things that make others grateful as well.

    Spend Meals Together Discussing Gratitude

For many American families, the hustle and bustle of work, school, and daycare keeps members apart for most of the day. Dinner time, or sometimes breakfast, is the only time the whole family can be together. Most people discuss the next day’s plans and what they did the current day. Add to your agenda everyone sharing one good thing that happened that day and one thing they are grateful for. This not only offers the opportunity to share the things they are thankful for, but to search them out during the day to have something to share. Over time, your children will become more aware of their thanks.

    Express Your Gratitude

Children learn best by example. There simply is no substitute for leading by example when teaching children. Be sure to express your own gratitude, and express it often. Say thank you, offer positive feedback to those who offer goods and services. Never let a favor or act of kindness go unthanked. Avoid being demanding or ungrateful to servers. When your children see and hear gratitude, they will learn to be more grateful and share their thanks.

    Give Thanks

In a time of so much uncertainty, your family’s lives surely changed this year. From disappointment to developing new normals and the stress of the unknown coupled with the fear of right now, your gratitude may have waned. This year, more than any, no matter what your situation looks like, give thanks. Amidst the video chats with extended family you’d normally share a table with, on the commercial break from the Bears game, take some time to express thanks for what you have and who you’re with. In the face of the greatest triumphs of our time, there is no better time than now to express gratitude with your children.

At Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids daycare serving Upper Darby, we express thanks for your children and each other often. Manners are a part of the curriculum at our child care center in an effort to build the total child. Gratitude is important for social development as well as emotional wellbeing of all children (and adults). To learn more about our early childhood education programs, visit us online or call our friendly staff directly. We are grateful for your consideration and look forward to speaking with you soon!

  • How to Protect Your Children From Illness

How to Protect Your Children From Illness

Let’s face it, getting sick is inevitable. As humans, we are the perfect host for a variety of microbes, and as social creatures, we are bound to pass them from one person to another. Add to that the expectation to go, go, go, and the delayed onset of symptoms for many diseases, and you’ve got yourself the perfect storm for an outbreak. 2020 has served as an eye-opener for many people who weren’t well versed in disease transmission and the importance of taking illness seriously. As the coronavirus pandemic rages on, we are once again entering flu season as well. So, we thought it would be a good idea to take a moment to discuss how to keep your children healthy this autumn.

    Be a Shining Example

Children learn best by following examples of those they see around them. To help reduce the likelihood of your child getting sick, be a good health role model! Begin with the basics like washing your hands frequently, and requiring your child to do so as well – before and after meals, after using the bathroom, when they are visibly soiled, and after touching shared surfaces. Always cough and sneeze into your elbow and stay home when you aren’t feeling well. When you set the example, it isn’t just your children who will pick up on your good habits, but other children and adults around you will likely follow suit. If you’ve ever heard the term herd immunity, it refers to the majority of people in your circle being healthy enough to keep those who are at risk protected. Behind your own nuclear family, be the shining example of health for your entire herd!

    Clean Regularly and Clean Again!

Germs and germ exposure is great for building healthy immune systems. However, recklessly exposing ourselves and our children to unnecessary microbes can be incredibly harmful. To reduce the number of germs we come in contact with, clean, clean, and clean again. We’ve already mentioned hand washing, which is a great start. You should also regularly wash commonly touched surfaces including your smartphone, door handles, and countertops. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product container to ensure you are completely sanitizing the area. Wash your children’s toys, shoes, and car seat regularly, along with frequent laundering of clothing and bedding and several baths a week. Cleaning ensures that microbes you’ve collected are washed away and don’t multiply. It also reduces the chances that you could pick something up and get sick or pass it along to a family member.

    Stay Home When You’re Sick

Somehow over the last decade or so, it has become a symbol of strength and loyalty to push through feeling ill or being in pain to work. Those who take the day off to nurse their fever from the safety of their home are chastised for being lazy or making things up, while those who work through an illness or injury are valued as having a strong work ethic. We could not disagree more. Staying home when you are sick shows loyalty and respect for those around you by choosing to keep your disease or infection to yourself. If you can work from home, we recommend that option, and, when you can’t, just take the day off to protect those around you.

    Other Things You Can Do

Other things you can do to protect your children from getting sick include:

    • Get immunized
    • Avoid touching your face
    • Avoid contact with those who are sick
    • Prevent children from putting community toys in their mouth
    • Get regular checkups
    • Finish prescribed medications

    Choose a Daycare That Cares

At Darlene’s Wee Care 4 Kids, we know that quality child care is important to maintaining your work schedule to provide for your family. More than keeping your children entertained while you are away, we are committed to keeping the minds and body healthy and nourished. Our staff is dedicated to keeping a clean facility while monitoring our kids for any sign of a contagious disease. We have recently installed thermal scanners to check the temperatures of everyone entering the building and have limited those allowed inside to the children we are watching.
